Plant innovation for sustainable leather tanning

Leather Sumac is a Redess Srl research and development project focused on the use of Sumac (Rhus coriaria) in sustainable leather tanning processes.
Our mission is to rediscover the value of traditional vegetable tanning and combine it with modern biotechnology to create natural, traceable, and low-impact materials.

Sumac and natural tanning

Since ancient times, Sumac has been used as a vegetable tanning agent due to its high concentration of natural tannins.

Today, our research enhances its potential through biotechnological innovation, improving:

Leather softness,

Resistance to environmental agents,

The overall biodegradability of the final product.

Applied innovation and research

In Redess laboratories we focus on:

  •      Sustainable tannin extraction systems,
  •      Optimization of tanning processes to reduce water and chemical usage,
  •      Comparative studies between sumac tanning and chrome tanning in terms of performance and sustainability.

We collaborate with research institutes and leather industries to develop certified, traceable solutions for global markets.
